You Can Procrastinate And Study – At The Same Time

The word “procrastination” originally meant “to put off until tomorrow”. Now, it is a word most students will be very familiar with. In the midst of exam period, the urge to turn away from study altogether is strong, with mobile phones, social media and friends often distracting factors. However, if you manage to integrate (very small) elements of procrastination with study, you can come out of studying feeling both prepared for exams and refreshed.

  1. Use what you want to do as a powerful motivator for study. This still requires some willpower. For example: spend 30 minutes memorising Psychology terms before you watch a YouTube video, or write an English essay before you scroll through Facebook. You could even spend a bit of time writing out things you’re looking forward to doing, just so you can use them to fuel your study for the next little while.
  2. Make a list of things to do and break down your tasks into smaller chunks. Not only is this kind of procrastination, it will make it easier for you when it comes to studying. One of the major reasons for procrastination is that the task at hand seems too large to contemplate approaching, and if you can break this task down, it becomes far more manageable.
  3. Set aside time to do no study at all. Rather than approaching the day with no plan, set aside a time when you are free to do anything you want. Then, for the rest of the day, you can ensure your brain is optimised and ready to complete the work you need to do.

Procrastination is a habit you can control. Don’t let it control you.
