How To Know When To Get Help

It can be hard to know whether to get a tutor or not. There are a range of factors to consider when it comes to deciding whether or not you need help.

Obviously, we think tutoring is great – we’re a tutoring agency! But tutoring can be whatever you want to make of it, whether you just want a one-off session or you think you need regular tutoring all year around.

Let’s look at some of the signs that a tutor could help you.

You don’t know how to approach your homework

If your parents or other support networks aren’t able to help you with the problems you are facing, it might be time to seek out a tutor. Often teachers can help you, but they can’t always give you the one-on-one, personalised time needed to make big improvements in your learning. A tutor will sit down with you and make sure you understand everything, giving you the time you need to ask questions.

You are unmotivated

Keeping motivation throughout schooling is almost impossible. Everyone goes through highs and lows. A tutor ensures that you have someone keeping you accountable besides your teachers. It’s helpful to have someone alongside you when you feel like you can’t concentrate – your tutor is there to encourage you, as well as help you academically.

You are falling behind your peers

It can be easy to give up on a subject if you feel like you are a long way behind everyone else. But a tutor will be able to identify the areas you can work on to catch up, and a great tutor will work with you patiently and steadily until you are able to catch up with everyone else and regain your confidence.

You want to achieve top marks

A lot of the time, students seek out tutoring to help differentiate themselves from the pack. Students who are already doing really well at school often engage a tutor to take them from the top 5% to the top 1% – something that will really matter if they want to study a degree such as medicine. A lot of the time, students are unable to work out why they aren’t getting the top marks they desire, and a tutor will be able to help them to identify what it is they can do, especially if their teachers are being vague. Don’t leave engaging a tutor to too late if you are in this situation; I have worked with students who came to me a month before the exam, saying they had been getting an average of B+ for assessments but were aiming to score in the top 2% – this is very, very difficult.
