HOW DO PREFERENCES WORK AT UNI?

The final year of high school study is always tough for students, mainly due to the anxiety of not knowing what will come around next. Although some students know exactly what they want to do in their tertiary study, it is not always clear for most students when they make the transition. The process of choosing preferences strongly aid this aspect of transition, allowing all students to choose a few of their desired study options after Year 12. In this passage, I will be talking about the preference list that UAC gives to all students completing their penultimate year in both NSW and ACT. Although there was a slight numerical change of preference selection, the five options are still ample.

The five options are chronological, in the sense that the first option you place will be considered your first choice of study, and will disregard your second option should you attain the ATAR needed for your first preference. The preference list can still be altered up until the deadline, usually at the beginning of January of each year, and thus can be adjusted in accordance with the ATAR you receive. In a very concise method, the preference which is put forward, in conjunction with the ATAR acquired gives the universities a summary on offers for your guaranteed placement in your chosen course.

These offers will be sent out before the preference deadline, allowing you to contemplate which offer you would like to take should you have received more than one. The flexibility and the ability to constantly change your number preference is significantly advantageous, and permits you the opportunity to consider the course in more detail with the knowledge that you will be guaranteed into that course in the following year should you make it your final first preference. This is the main reason why many students feel a significant reduction of stress during this selection process.
